Massive village administrators resign today in Maybon, Rakhine State, Myanmar, and Arakan Army is looking to fill up the vacancies in order control the township.

These resignations occur after Myanmar military and police arrested three village administrators and charged with terrorist laws separately on June 4 and May 31.

Fifty nine village and ward chairmen submit the resignation letter to the higher authority Zar Nay Kyaw in Maybon. Along with the letter, they demand the authority to release their arrested colleagues immediately. But no response is heard.

Military and police arrested Chairman Aung Than at his resident in west ward in Maybon yesterday and taken to the military based for interrogation.

U Kyaw Myint and U Maung Zaw, administrators in different ward and village, were arrested and charged with terrorist laws in Maybon on May 31.

All these administrators including arrested and resigned are elected leaders voted by the local residents in 2015 election. They have been grown up and lived together with these local folks. They know each other well since their childhoods. These leaders have been taking care of the communities well and respected.

The township administrator is an alien, appointed and assigned for certain terms in the town.

Now, all are ruin and disaster of managing the communities amid Covid-19 pandemic threat, high civilian casualties, and increase of violence and internally displaced.

“Out of 65 administrators, 59 resigned and 3 arrested, then only 3 administrators in far away from the town stay. How can city administrator and the three chairmen manage the entire communities all over the township,” Aung Myay Kone Village Chairman questioned.

Arakan News agency called Zar Nay Kyaw, township administrator, for several times, but he did not pick up the phone.

Civil administration known as General Administration Department (GAD) has been transferred to the Minister for the Union Government Office headed by Min Thu, former deputy minister in the president office, by Home Ministry since last December.

All administration officers including the village chairmen are under President Win Myint office jurisdiction via the union government office.

Arakan News agency called President U Win Myint in Naypaytaw at 6.42 PM today to verify the massive resignations of chairmen in Rakhine State. His assistant answered the phone and said she did not know anything about it.

But Military Spokesperson Maj. Gen Zaw Min Tun has already told the media he does not worry much about it because there are some people who want to serve the chairman posts.

“For most of the times, I am very confused who speaks for whom. Military spokesperson speaks for the government sometimes. The president office spokesperson speaks for the military most of the times. So, I don’t know who is who,” political analyst, whose name keeps unpublished, said.

Similarly, hundreds of village administrators in Mrauk U and Kyauktaw townships resigned last years when their colleagues were arrested and imprisoned for lengthy terms.

Some observers reported Arakan Army has been filling up its administrators in villages in northern Rakhine State. These massive resignations and vacancies in Maybon townships are a good opportunity for AA to pick up.
